The Moroccan literary scene has witnessed during the last two decades the notable emergence of a new phenomenon that consists in the birth and the rise of a literature written in English. Many native writers from both inside and outside Morocco have in fact chosen the English language as a medium to channel their creative writings and to try their hands at different literary genres: poetry, novel, drama, short story and travel accounts. Thus writers such as H. Mekouar (Rabat), A. Akbib (Tetouan), J. Elkoudia (Fes), A. Radi (Marrakesh) and M. Dellal (Oujda), have produced literary texts that really call for due critical and academic consideration. Similarly, writers living abroad like A. Majid, L. Lalami, D. Temsamani and M. Fandi have published literary and cultural texts that have even commanded some international recognition.
So far, no special conference or study day has been organized in Morocco to study or discuss the aforementioned phenomenon. That is why CERHSO is taking the initiative to instigate some critical and scholarly interest in this new Moroccan literature of English expression…. CERHSO will organize this study day in cooperation with the English Department of the Faculty of Letters - Oujda. Participants can deal with any one of these—and other related—subjects:
1. Why do these Moroccan authors choose to write in English, a third (and sometimes fourth) language?
2. What can be said about the themes and the techniques that are deployed in these writings?
3. To what extent could we categorize this literature as Moroccan?
4. To what extent is it part of what is called ‘postcolonial literature’?
5. Can it have the same success as its counterpart written in French? What about its future?
